Roughly 70 per cent of the country's car owners may cringe at the rise in fuel prices, but the rising cost of petrol and diesel does not appear to have put the brakes on the market for luxury cars, even though they deliver a measly mileage in single digits. Till April, sales of luxury cars, defined as those costing Rs 40 lakh and more, touched 4,000 units the same as the number of cars sold for the whole of 2007.

By June 2009, the $6 billion Mahindra & Mahindra group will open its new $116 million automobile design and development facility called the Mahindra Research Valley spread over 150 acres in Mahindra World City in Chennai. Amongst cars sold in the mid-size category (domestic sales) between April 2007 and March 2008, diesel variants outsold petrol car models roughly in the ratio of 7:3. That means over 70 per cent of the over 1,79,493 mid-size cars sold in the domestic markets were diesel models. Diesel mid-size cars on an average are priced 15.5 per cent more than the petrol variant. Overall, the mid-size category, petrol and diesel models included, grew by 14.6 per cent.

The 300 mw Group Captive Power Project (GCPP) being set up by Vidarbha Industries Power (VIPL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by Reliance Power, at Butibori near Nagpur in Maharashtra, will soon enter the construction phase. Sources said the required land has been acquired and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has given the green signal for setting up the project. Reliance Power will soon award the EPC contract for the Rs 1500 crore project.

While the April to September period (H1) saw as many as eight major deals worth over Rs 5,000 crore (Rs 50 billion), the second half of the year saw a sharp drop in the value of such deals to about Rs 1,500 crore (Rs 15 billion). Though the number of deals in H1 and H2 is almost the same, the sharp decline in value in the second half indicates a clear change in outlook and strategy of companies, say industry experts.
